My Magazine Dilemma

1 June 2012

I used to love reading magazines. I would buy one a week and leisurely read a bit at a time. Then I had kids. Now nothing seems relevant to me.

Now I stand in front of the magazine shelves in Sainsbury's and don't have a clue what to choose. I'm a 36 year old married mum of two who works part time, surely it can't be that hard to find something I like.

Before I had the Darlings I used to read Cosmopolitan, Grazia, Glamour, Heat and OK {amongst others}. Now I don't feel like I fit into their target market. The fashions are too expensive and impractical for a mum of two, the features are written by and about young, single women with no commitments and reading them makes me feel old.

When I was pregnant and they were babies I read Practical Parenting, Mother & Baby and Pregnancy & Birth. Now the Darlings are a bit older {3 & 1 years old), I no longer need advice on which baby monitor to buy or which type of pain relief to go for during labour.

I've tried a few other magazines recently. I had a little phase of reading 'Woman' magazine... I felt it was kind of targeted at me but it didn't really draw me in. I also had a read of a 'Woman and Home' magazine that someone left in the canteen at work... it made me feel young! I bought Essentials last week and thought it was quite good... maybe I'll stick with it.

Please recommend some good magazine reads to me! What magazines do you read? Have you had the same problem as me?

  1. So know what you mean :) I can't stand Heat anymore but used to wait for it to come out each week! I think I like Essentials the best at the mo.... was given a subscription for it last Christmas and loved it arriving! Prima I find is a bit too elderly for me whereas Essentials seems a bit younger without all the celebrity crap, which for some reason I can't seem to stand anymore! Lol! Though looking at my pile of magazines I think the one I look forward to the most is Good Food...not sure what that says!

    1. Thanks for the advice Jo, I'll steer clear of Prima! I'm not into reading about celebs anymore either, I think that's why I didn't like Woman mag that much. Funnily enough my latest magazine is called Cupcakes & Sweet Treats {bought for me by my mum!} xx

    1. Hi, thanks for visiting! I love reading other people's blogs too and I've just got a Kindle and I love it. I try to go for the free or really cheap books though! xx

  3. I don't buy magazines anymore for the same reasons as you. I did try Psychologies for a bit which I quite enjoyed. Now I tend to read blogs instead!
